How long have you been volunteering for the SCAA?
What was the first SCAA event you volunteered for and what were your duties?
The 2005 World Barista Championship where I was doing station maintenance on the competition machines.
What is your current volunteer roll and what are your other duties in Portland 2012?
I will be instructing RP104 – Decaffeination and acting as a Head Judge for the US Barista Championship.
Describe your most memorable volunteering experience so far?
Judging in the 2007 US Barista Championship. After competing for two years, this was my first time evaluating competitors instead of being one. It was such a great learning experience and it led to my continuing involvement in barista competitions.
How has volunteering for the SCAA influenced your coffee career?
Whether I am re-writing lesson plans, instructing, or judging, every new volunteer opportunity brings to light new things to learn. The constant learning has continually pushed me further and further and reminds me to never think that I know everything on any subject.
